How to choose overhead garage door
Overhead garage doors became popular in the early 80s more around 1985, because of the convenience of the door being over head and out of the way compared to the older barn door style doors opening out and to the sides. They have now become pretty standard on most garages. These overhead doors come available with automatic openers or can also be manually opened.
There are many different types of material that overhead garage doors are made out of which include wood, metal, aluminum, vinyl, and fiberglass to mention the most common. With these different types of materials comes cost and efficiency of how the door will operate and how long it will last. Thinking about the wood style door as you can imagine the weight will be more and will most likely have more maintenance over the years mostly due to weather. As to a door made out of metal you would probably have less weight and last a little longer, but still would have the issue of rust obtaining on the material over the years.
So in my opinion your best choice for an overhead garage door would be to choose one made of, vinyl, aluminum, or fiberglass in that order and this is why. First off one of the only advantages with the fiberglass door compared to the wood or steel door is that it weighs less and will not rust but it is not as durable as some of the others. Other than that your best choice in a door would be to choose the vinyl or aluminum. The aluminum door is also going to be a lighter weight and rust free but is more durable than the fiberglass, wood, or metal door. It can also be insulated for heated garages, which is a advantage also.
Now though your best choice in an overhead door would be a vinyl door, because of the light weight, lifespan and dent resistant material, you might find the upfront cost may be more initially than the others. Just keep in mind that the majority of vinyl doors sold now comes with a lifetime warranty in which most others do not. But when it comes down to it, ultimately the door you choose is yours.
